Joannes was born on August 15th, 1749 in Asenray.  Joannes' father was Mattias Janssen and his mother was Joanna Thomassen.  His maternal grandparents were Geerken Thomassen and Margaretha van Neel.  He had four brothers and five sisters, named Joannes, Gerardus, Franciscus, Gerardus, Margaretha, Margaretha, Gertrudis, Hendrina and Joanna.  He was the nineth oldest of the ten children.
