Gerardus was born on January 1st, 1752 in Maasniel.  Gerardus' father was Mattias Janssen and his mother was Joanna Thomassen.  His maternal grandparents were Geerken Thomassen and Margaretha van Neel.  He had four brothers and five sisters, named Joannes, Gerardus, Franciscus, Joannes, Margaretha, Margaretha, Gertrudis, Hendrina and Joanna.  He was the youngest of the ten children.
